MTBE is a type of organic chemical known as an ether. Although MTBEbreaks down in the presence of sunlight, it does not break down readily in groundwater. at 5. Mr.Cobb testified that the Agency does not generally track MTBE contamination problems atprivate water wells because these wells are not yet tested for MTBE.
