am writing as a concerned Chicago private citizen and taxpayer and as a

co-founder of the Friends of the Chicago River civic/environmental group.

I urge the IPCB to support the proposed improvements to water quality

standards incorporated in Rule Making R08-009.

As you know, since 1979, Friends of the Chicago River has been the leading

citizen-based organization supporting efforts to clean up and revitalize the

Chicago River. Thanks to the good work of the Metropolitan Sanitary

District

(I

know, I'm dating myself!) and the Deep Tunnel, we now have

much-improved water quality in many parts of the Chicago River—enough

to support recreation, restored wildlife and plants, and greater use of this

once underappreciated environmental resource.

On behalf of my family and future generations of Chicagoans, I urge you to

support the Illinois EPA and approve the changes recommended in Rule

Making R08-009.
