Ms
. Gunn,
I am writing the Pollution Control Board to urge you not to grant the appeal for the expansion of
Peoria Disposal Company Landfill #1
. The reasons for my request are obvious
. The process
was followed and the Peoria County Board found that PDC did not meet just one, but three of the
nine criteria
. PDC has chosen to continue to fight this battle through the appeals process and by
applying for a permit modification with the IEPA to consider them as a waste generator
. It
seems like it would be much easier if they would put their efforts towards earning the
communities trust instead of undermining it further
.
We are all guilty of generating hazardous waste and yes we need a place to put the waste that we
can not recycle
. That place is not less than '/2
mile from residential housing, less than 3 miles
from 23 schools and most certainly not over fingers of our primary aquifer that should supply us
with drinking water indefinitely
. A resource that is scarce in many other areas of our country
.
PDC has done just that not only for Peoria County waste, but the numbers indicate they have
done it for many other counties and states
as well
. There are only 11 similar sites in the country
.
All of them are located in areas with average populations between 400 and 19,000 and are no
closer than 3 miles to residential areas not 180,000 people and
V2 mile from residential housing
.
Much has changed since 1987 when their initial permit was granted, but the fact remains our
Peoria County Board did not support the landfill in 1985, and again they voted the expansion
down in 2006, based on not one, but three criteria
. The bottom line is it makes no sense to grant
an appeal.
Sincerely,
Cathy Ste
