Case
: PCB 06++184, Peoria Disposal Co . vs
. Peoria County Board
Dear Ms
. Webb,
You and the Illinois Pollution Control Board have the future environment of our
area in your hands
. You are faced with the most important decision affecting our
citizens of the last 50 years
. It is time to permanently seal the Peoria Disposal
Company Hazardous Waste Landfill and say "No" to the expansion as voted by the
Peoria County Board
.
This landfill is located at the west edge of Peoria where 53,000 people live within
three miles of it and the entire city is downwind of it
. It is a threat to our water
supplies
. The landfill sits atop the sand aquifer from which 60% of the Peoria water
supply is drawn
.
According to the federal EPA Toxic Release Inventory, Peoria County has the
highest concentration of toxic releases of any Illinois county and is the sixteenth
highest in the nation, with the PDC landfill listed as the prime reason
. You have the
power to change this for the better
.
I am enclosing the letter to the Peoria Journal Star from the heads of the medical
staff of each of the three hospitals in town expressing the real threat of the
expansion of the toxic hazardous waste facility
. The 750 doctors are speaking in
unison on this issue
. I do not think there is any need for a second opinion
.
For these reasons I urge you to uphold the vote of the Peoria County Board
. I urge
you also to hold Peoria Disposal Company responsible for any future
. We do not
want this to end up, as many other waste dumps have, on the backs of taxpayers
.
Please do the right thing for the future of our citizens and their children
.
Sincerely,
Ron W

Peoria doctors : PDC landfill
hazardous to your health
Saturday, February 11, 2006
There are few opportunities for physicians in this community to
speak with one voice on an issue which potentially affects the
health of our entire community . In the eyes of physicians in and
around Peoria, the proposed expansion of the hazardous waste
facility owned and operated by Peoria Disposal Company
represents a significant threat to all of us who live and work in
Peoria County.
Over the last week, the medical executive committees of all three
Peoria hospitals (representing over 750 doctors) have voted to
speak with a united voice to oppose the proposed expansion of
this toxic waste disposal facility .
Physicians in this community are alarmed about the potential
short- and long-term health consequences that this facility poses
to the population of Peoria County
. Our concerns specifically
relate to the proximity of the dump to a major metropolitan area,
as well as its siting over the Sankoty aquifer, from which we
derive much of our drinking water
.
The physicians of Peoria County urge the County Board to deny
the permit for expansion of the PDC facility .
