RE : Comments on Proposed New 35 ILL
. ADM . CODE 225, Control of Emissions from
Large Combustion Sources (Mercury)
; R0G-25
Dear Honorable Members of the Illinois Pollution Control Board and the Joint
Committee on Administrative Rules,
I am writing to support the proposed rule changes to reduce mercury emissions from
coal-fired power plants .
Mercury is a powerful neurotoxin, which poses a serious threat to developing fetuses
.
Mercury contamination has forced the State of Illinois to issue warnings against frequent
consumption of fish from Illinois waterways, especially for women of childbaring age .
Fortunately, a 90% reduction in mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants is now
technically feasible and economically manageable
. That is why I am proud to join with
Governor Blagojevich and many health and environmental advocates throughout Illinois
in supporting this rule .
Sincerely,
