I am writing to express my strong concern for the toxic waste landfill on the city's west
edge that may be expanded to include six million more cubic yards over the next 15
years
. I am writing to not only reject the expansion of this landfill but also to request
permanent closure
; since we have become aware of several permanent problems effecting
real people in this area .
There are 873 toxic chemicals that the Illinois EPA permits the Peoria Disposal Company
to bury in this 74 acre landfill . Currently, the EPA is only conducting testing of
groundwater on only 20 of the chemicals
. A recent five country study in Europe found
that babies born of mothers living within 2 miles of hazardous waste landfills had 40%
more birth defects
. This is hazardous to the health of Peoria residents
.
Peoria has a dense population living downwind from a 2 mile radius of this landfill
. This
includes 265 residential streets and Bradley University
; effecting single and multi-family
residents and a huge college student population
. 60% of our city water supply is drawn
from the aquifer that adjoins this landfill
. This is hazardous to the health of Peoria
residents.
I do not want this highly toxic waster from throughout the Midwest and beyond right in
Peoria
. Currently, toxic wastes have come from 15 different states and filled our landfill
located right in the heart of Illinois
. This is hazardous to the health of Peoria residents
and can affect our mortality rates .
I am asking you to: 1 . Reject the expansion of this landfill
. 2
. Begin now the permanent
closures of this landfill . 3
. Become a community voice to urge the state and nation to
require the development of detoxifying hazardous waste and recycling it instead of
burying it in the ground where it remains hazardous
. I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,
