Mercury is a known neurotoxin that already contaminates fish in all Illinois

mercury exposure harms the human brain, heart, and immune system
.
Developing fetuses and children are especially at risk as even low-level mercury
exposure can cause learning disabilities, developmental delay and decreased IQ .

It's not a matter of CAN we afford to do it, we simply CANNOT AFFORD NOT to do it ;
this is a clear cut case of deliberately causing ultimately premature death or
nervous system destruction in thousands of Illinoisans, or adopting simple controls
that protect human life . If industry wins on this one, then the state of Illinois
shows it is on the side of destruction of human life and business interests over and
above protecting life . Further, Illinois businesses CAN afford to put in these
controls, and the state of Illinois should turn a deaf ear to their groaning and
moaning of an extra expense to stop killing people prematurely

I am also adding my own comments instead of those of IL PIRG .
I enjoy sport fishing and I am saddened and disgusted that the fish I catch are
unsafe to eat . So much is written about the health benefits of fish in one's diet and
yet I realize I am taking a gamble when I eat one .
As a resident of Evanston near Evanston Hospital, I worked with neighbors to shut
down their incinerator to eliminate any chance of releasing dioxins or heavy metal
ash . The toxins released by coal burning plants are just as harmful . Unfortunately,
Illinois-mined coal is some of the dirtiest .
Pollution control is expensive-but pollution costs are greater . Please clean up power
plant emissions .
