Dear Ms. Gunn,
I am writing to request that you would uphold the Kankakee
County’s decision to deny Waste Management’s proposal on
March 17, 2004.
Any reconsideration made at the special county board
meeting on May 25, 2005 cannot be seriously considered
because the appeal was made with new stipulations for an
expansion on the old landfill. It is not even the same proposal
as on the application on file.
The board members admitted they were not influenced by
outsiders at the March 17, 2004 meeting, therefore this
decision should stand based on the health, safety and welfare
of the people living here; period.
We, in this county are not ready to give up and drink bottled
water for the sake of a quick
fix.
This expansion will only lead
into more hazardous toxins into our beautiful river. No
amount of money could make us want to poison our fish, our
wildlife that thrive from the river, not to mention this our only
drinking supply in the cities.
The environmentalist admittedly reported there is an ever
increasing level of mercury showing up in the Kankakee River.
It was pointed out that there was a posted article in 1988
that claimed the county had lifted the hazardous waste ban on
the landfill. So the industry that was seeking a dumping place
for their mercury found their answer. We are yet to feel the
full repercussions to come from this.
I believe other counties have spent $50 million and upwards
just to clean up their rivers. We are supposed to have one of
the cleanest in the state. We want no further pollution in this
particular life source. Please have consideration for the
environment, the wildlife and the human inhabitants in this
area when making your final decision. Thank you for your
time looking at case no. 2004-186.
Sincerely,
eL
Ms. Andrea M. Taylor
