Comments concerning Waste Management
Appeal Hearing Case
#i~~)
According To published information(Kankakee Daily
Journal
Mon.,
April 4,2005) and
presented to the IPCB, “Waste Management, Inc. alleged a Mr. Harrison
directly
lobbied(Kankakee)County Board
members
inviolation of
state
landfill laws’~.
To me,
that seems like a strangelaw.
I thought in
America
the public
was
supposed to be able to
talk to elected representatives.
I
always
thought elected representatives were
supposed
to represent the people’s concerns about an
issue.
IfI’m
wrong
in
that
assumption,
then
my opinion is
that
such laws should be changed in
fhvor offree speechfor the people.
Regardless ofwhat Waste Management
and
the IPCB
find
here, in my opinion, the Pollution
Control Board should help
preserve our
water supply,
our aquatic life
in the Iroquois River
and
the Kankakee River
and
their affected tributaries, by denying more
garbage dumps,
or
expanding
existing dumps, next to or
right
onthe
all-important
underground
aquif~rsand our quality streams.
I would also request ofthe IL PCB they
take
steps to
correct
the
reported
vinyl chloride problemat
the current Kankakee
County Dump, that
to the best of my knowledge, has never
been
properly
addressed. We
need
to protect
our
remaining
drinking
water
resources
for now
and
the
future.
The above mentioned waterways
are
extremely
important
for the continued reproduction
and
presence of
many
forms of
aquatic
life
that
have
made our
local Iroquois and Kankakee Rivers
known
throughout the
country
as some ofthe
finest
of
recreational and
environmental streams.
Please deny the
expanded
landfill request.
Sincerely,
Ed Mullady, Editor
