Regarding
Case
#PCB 03-188 and PCB 03-218
Dear
Dorothy,
There
has
been
much
negative
response
to
the
malicious
lies
being
spread
in
Rochelle
by
a
group
called
000C
that
people
who
I
thought were, fairly
intelligent
with
some
common
sense
have
come
to
believe
that
the
proposed
landfill
expansion
is
a
terrible,
dirty
thought.
Terminology
like
“dump
city’;
“dump
juice*..~~savethe
water”
..
“save
our
children”to
scare
the
hell
out
of the people in
this
community.
To
be positive in my thoughts about disagreeing with their lies,
I took
time to go to the landfill site myself to see what was going on.
I ~as
amazed at the ‘size of the whole area and I was even more amazed by the effort
the
people
running
the
operation
took
to
make
sure
that
everything
was
safe
aM
smooth.
I
was
fortunate
enough
to
be
there
to
see
a
new liner
being
put
in,
how it
is
sealed
and
tested
for
leaks
before
putting
a
foot
of
protection
over the top and
then
another
covering
to
force
run-off
into
a
sewer
system.
I found out w~atleachate was and how they go about pumping it and the
backup system i~~fproblems down the line, all for safety.
I witnessed
the portable litter fencing being moved into position to prevent wind blov~n
garbage from Epreading. I saw a well that was tested and found to have
water
that was
LJ~000tears old.
The city of Rochelle paid for private engineers
to test the site and
found everythig in A-One shape and made their report accordingly.
The city
fathers of Creston have given their okay for the expansion.
The whole landfill site has clay
60 to 200 feet
deep
before
reaching
bedrock which sits on top of the sandstone our water comes from. I think you
and
your
board
know
what
the
possibility
of
water
being
contaminated
under
these
conditions
is
and I
see
no
reason
why
you
should
not
recommend
the
okay
for
the
expansion.
Instead
of
fighting
it,
the
people
of
this
community
should
be
thankful
we
have
an
efficiently
run
landfill
by
people
who
really
care
about
the
safety
of
the
whole
operation.
I sincerely hope your board recommends an okay for expansion.
Thank You
