Re: Case # PCB 03-221
Dear Ms Gunn:
On Tuesday May 6th of this year, the McHenry county Board voted to deny the application of Marshall
Lowe to site a Solid Waste Transfer Station on his property at 3412 Northwest Highway. As you know,
there are 9 criteria for a waste transfer station and they are all required to~bemet for the application to
be approved. Of the 9 criteria, Mr. Lowe’s application failed on 3 of them. Criteria #2, #3 & #5 were not
met. As such, the application was not approved and not Mr. Lowe is trying to have the Illinois Pollution
Control Board overrule the local governing body.
We support the McHenry County Board’s decision that the criteria in question were not forthe~fo1Iowing
reasons.
•
There would be a substantial increase in garbage truck traffic in the area which would lead to
an increase in the local air pollution, noise, pollution, an increase in the vermin population and a
potential groundwater ~ollution.
•
The proposed facility is adjacent to the McHenry Conservation Districts Hollows conservation
area, and as such poses a pollution problem for this special area.
•
The location is also within 1000 feet of one the largerresidential neighborhoods in Cary, Bright
Oaks.
•
The location is on one of the heaviest traveled roads in the McHenry area, US RTE 14. This
roadway was just rebuilt and the increase in the kind of truck traffic would cause the State of
Illinois to provide additional turn lanes and future maintenance that was not planned for in the
initial design.
In closing, mywife and I strongly support the McHenry County board’s decision to deny the applicatiOn
and would request that the Illinois Pollution Control Board do the same and it~sdenial of the application
be added to the public record along with the local government’s denial.
Sincerely,
Robert & Marge WagneV
