The

Agency has proposed and the Board has acknowledged in

R79—6 a

series

of regulatory hearings which are expected

to

culminate

in the establishment of specific numerical water

quality standards for all of the stream segments in

Illinois

based upon the actual and anticipated uses of such segments.

The State is required by Section 303 of the Federal

WaLer Pollution Control Act as amended by the Clean Water

Act

of 1977 to

periodically review applicable water quality

standards

and make appropriate

modifications,

The review

will begin with R79~6hearings on June 13,

1979, and are

expected to provid~a detailed and comprehensive consideration

of water

quality

standards

in Illinois.

It is the opinion

of the Board that th?

proposal set forth in R79-8 will be

better

addressed as

an integral part of the final action in

R79~6and

that the proceedings should be consolidated.
