    petition
    for variance
    to use
    copper
    sulfate
    beginning
    in

    1973
    is
    dismissed
    without
    prejudice
    as
    being
    premature
    and
    inadequate.
    No
    mention
    is
    made
    of possible
    alternatives
    to the use
    of
    copper
    sulfate
    which
    were
    discussed
    at
    some
    length
    in
    two recent
    Board
    opinions
    (Cities
    of
    Lailarpe,
    Carbondale,
    Marion,
    PCB
    72-168,
    203,
    225,
    August
    8.
    1972;
    Cities
    of
    Paris
    and Oakland,
    PCB
    72-277,
    289,
    August
    15,
    1972).
    Data
    on
    resulting
    copper
    levels
    from
    past
    dosages
    is
    not
    provided.
    In
    addition,
    two letters
    from
    expert
    State
    Agencies
    have been
    recently
    received
    by the
    Board
    on the
    subject
    (Illinois
    Natural
    History
    Survey
    by
    Dr.
    George
    Bennett,
    August
    22,
    1972; Illinois
    State
    Water
    Survey
    by
    Dr.
    William
    Ackermann,
    August
    24,
    1972) and should
    be
    examined
    by
    the
    petitioner
    to determine
    their
    possible
    applicability
    to the
    Carbondale
    situation.
    The
    Agency
    is
    asked
    to
    furnish
    these
    letters
    to
    the petitioner.
    Ample time
    remains
    for
    the
    Board
    to
    consider
    a new petition
    if still
    necessary
    since
    the first
    treatment
    is
    not
    expected
    until
    May 1973.
