Dear Illinois Pollution Control Board:
This letter is in regards to case number PCB 03-221, concerning the proposed waste transferfacility in
Cary, IL My family and I have lived in Cary for the past twalve years. We moved here from a
Massachusetts suburb, and chose Cary from the many possible towns near my husband’s new job.
There were many reasons for our decision, including the excellent school system and the overall
character of the town. It is this character that I feel v~uldbe in grave danger if the proposed waste
facility were to be allowad. In 1994 ourfamily and many others ~rked together to build the Timbertown
playground on Georgetown Drive. This property is just across route
14
and around the corner from the
proposed facility. On any given day that the waather is even remotely nice one can pass this
playground and see many families enjoying the park and surrounding fields. Families walk, bike, and
drive to the park, not only for the playground equipment but also to play soccer, practice baseball, fly
kites or run around the fields ~nththeir dogs. Imagine on the warmer days the breeze carrying the
odors and noise of a waste transferfacility to this family play area. One that was designed, paid for, and
built by the families that use it. Our family is also one of countless numbers that enjoy the Hollows
conservation property which is located directly next to the proposed facility property. In a time when
open space and natural settings are disappearing at a rapid rate one can hike into the Hollows and be
surrounded by nature. Large trees, lakes, deer, and hawks are just some of nature’s gifts that my
children enjoy being part of at this site. To put a waste transfer facility adjacent to this beautiful area is
hardly “minimizing incompatibility with the character of the surrounding area.” I’m not sure why
someone v~uIdwant to build a facility where it is so unv~’anted, except for the benefit of their financial
bottom line. Of course, this is at the expense of the homeowners’ finances, when their property values
are impacted. Please listen to the residents of this town when we ask you not to allow this facility to be
built After all, we are the ones who will have to live next to your decision.
Sincerely,
Mary Cote
