Pollution Control Board,
I am writing about the proposed landfill expansion involving Rochelle Waste Disposal,
L.L,C., vs. City Council ofthe city ofRochelle, Illinois, case number 188 and PCB 2003-
218. As a local resident ofRochelle, I have many concerns about the proposed landfill
site.
We in northern Illinois are blessed with an abundance of fresh ground water; where as
other parts ofour state are not. How we care for it is up to us. Whether your water
comes from a city well or a private well, it all comes from the ground. We complain
when we don’t have it and complain when it has minerals that stain or smell, but we do
have enough ofit if we take care ofit. A landfill site is a concentration ofcontamination.
These contaminants could leach into groundwater. The proposed landfill is located above
our water supply. We in Rochelle don’t want contaminants over our drinking water.
Understanding that we need to put our waste somewhere, maybe other things should be
considered. We should think about putting our waste in areas that have no or very little
freshwater.
This could very well have been what the city council had in mind when they said ‘no” to
this landfill expansion earlier this year. It was very heartwarming to see that their
opinion was not biased by the large amounts ofmoney offered by the applicant.
Thank you for considering the strong opinions ofRochelle.
