Dear Illinois Pollution Control Board :
Mercury pollution from Illinois coal plants is a danger to our health and our environment. Please make sure
Illinois' mercury rule:
- Requires coal plants to reduce their mercury pollution by 90 percent by 2009
Does not allow for "pollution trading" schemes that would let some polluters buy their way out of
cleaning up
-
Does not contain loopholes that would let some coal plants avoid installing the best available
pollution controls
.

Dear
Members of
the Illinois
Pollution Control Board,
I
urge you to
accept the
Governor's proposal
of strong controls
thatwould
cut
coal
plant mercury pollution by 90% by 2009
. Every waterway in
now
Illinoiscarries
a health warning for mercury contamination
. Illinois can
address
this problem now and show America how requiring cost-effective measures
mercury
for
control will clean up local lakes and streams to promote a
healthy
economy .
Reducing mercury emissions by 90% is achievable at reasonable cost
.
Pleaseapprove
this plan to protect our families and our wildlife from
unnecessary
harm .
This is a decision which is more a matter of common sense than anything
else -
the health and welfare of human life, and the health and safety
of the unborn
-
these are of much greater priority than coal and the
coal industry
. I urge you to use common sense and proportion to protect
the people of Illinois
.
