sh, game and wildlife health impacts due to mercury pollution levels, in 2004
id 2005 :
Bald Eagle health problems
Gamefish, including walleye and bass, fail to reproduce, survive, and found to
grow slower
Loons, otters and mink sharing fishing waters with anglers show heavy con-
tamination
Duck mercury study leads to emergency restrictions issued to hunters during
duck season
It doesn't have to be this way . Coal-
fired power plants release nearly
100,000 pounds of mercury into our
air every year (along with other toxins
like arsenic). This is the largest sin-
gle source of mercury pollution in fish,
waterfowl and wildlife inhabiting our
local lakes and streams . But we can
do better . Installing cost-effective
mercury controls on coal plants would
address this problem, and over time
make fish safe to feed our families
again .
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has proposed cutting
mercury pollution from Illinois coal plants by 90% by 2009 .
We have the technology to meet these levels and protect our
families' health, but the out-of-state companies that own these
plants are fighting to derail the plan instead
.
Illinois sportsmen and women can add their voices to
those who want clean air, clean water, and healthy wildlife
populations . Use the postcard attached to tell the Illinois
Pollution Control Board to support the Governor's proposal
.
Send the other card back to us and we'll keep you posted on
the proposal and other opportunities to help enact it.

The Illinois Pollution Control Board :
I urge you to adopt strong controls that, by 2009, would
cut coal plant mercury pollution by 90%
.
Every river, lake, and stream in Illinois now carries
1
a health
warning for mercury contamination . Illinois can address this
problem now and show America how requiring cost-effective
measures for mercury control will clean up local lakes and
streams and promote a healthy economy
.
Reducing mercury emissions by 90% is achievable at
our
reasonable
families
costand
.
