Modern, inexpensive pollution controls can capture 90% of the mercury from power
plants
. IEPA's rule would simply require Illinois coal-fired power plants to use this
technology
. Please support the rule to make it clear that putting our children at
risk for brain damage is not an acceptable cost of doing business in Illinois
.
Certainly our health is worth the minor economic impact implementing mercury (and
other pollutions) controls
. Not to mention that the cost seldom discussed but very
real are the health-care costs associated with treating ailments caused by pollution
.
There are, of course, lots of different angles to address the economic impacts of
implenting pollution controls
: health care costs (as discussed), lost productivity,
worker compensation lawsuits, insurance coverage, and so on
. There is no support
that pollution costs will result in job losses, and higher costs to accomodate these
technologies can either be supplemented by the state government, or would be a
neglible increase in rates passed down to consumers
. In other words, the only reason
not to pass this measure (or demand more!) is to allow utilities to pocket more
profit
. This at the expense of people, including yourself and your family
. This is
a moral issue that places people against money
.

I
am writing to urge you to support the IEPA mercury rule to reduce power plant
mercury emissions by 90% by 2009 .
Mercury is a known neurotoxin that harms the human brain, heart, and immune system
.
Developing fetuses and children are especially at risk as even low-level mercury
exposure can cause learning disabilities, developmental delay and decreased IQ
.
Modern, inexpensive pollution controls can capture 90% of the mercury from power
plants
. IEPA's rule would simply require Illinois coal-fired power plants to use this
technology . Please support the rule to make it clear that putting our children at
risk for brain damage is not an acceptable cost of doing business in Illinois
.
