Subject
: Please Say No To Peoria Disposal Company Expansion in Peoria Illinois
Dear IL Pollution Control Board
:
I am a Peoria County citizen and a resident of Wardcliffe Subdivision
. I am opposed to
the proposed expansion of the Peoria Disposal Company's (PDC) toxic waste landfill
. I
was disheartened to learn that this dump is located above one finger of the Sankoty
Aquifer, which, as you know, is our major source of drinking water in the Peoria area
.
I
urge you to deny the application before you to expand the landfill to accept more toxic
waste
. The Peoria County Board voted last year to deny the expansion
.
Common sense should dictate that the safety precautions undertaken by PDC to contain
the toxins is merely a short term solution
. A breach of the safety liners due to age,
neglect, natural disaster, or intangible means not known at this time is inevitable at some
point in the future
. The cleanup involved with such a breach would be a monetary
impossibility and an environmental disaster to the greater Peoria area
.
I understand that toxic waste needs to go somewhere, but not here
. I don't believe that
our neighborhoods should be put at risk to satisfy the hazardous waste disposal needs
of private companies from other states
. There are no benefits to the citizens of Peoria
and Peoria County to provide this service for them
. My residence is located
approximately Ya mile downwind of this facility that has been and will continue (if you
grant this permit) to accept the most dangerous and volatile toxic waste from all around
the Midwest
. That is unacceptable to me
.
I urge you to use prudence and common sense and recognize that safety claims cannot
be proven, the health risks are too high, and that the economic return is too low
. Please
place the health of citizens as the most important consideration and deny the expansion
request .
Sincerely,
Christop fi~usharer Ma
