RE: Rule Making R08-009
Gentlemen,
With some professional experience as a former consultant to a municipal drinking water supply
products company, I have some insights into practices by other municipalities with regard to
waste water treatment technologies.
Therefore, I would like to strongly urge your support for the recommended water quality
standard improvements proposed by the Illinois EPA for the Chicago Area Waterways (CAWS)
as well as the Lower Des Plaines River as stated in Rule Making R08-009.
I understand that these proposed changes are the result of many years of study, and likely should
have been implemented much sooner. On behalf of not only my family, but everyone else who
uses these waterways for recreational and other purposes – as well as the affected aquatic life
within these waters - I hope that you will support and approve these changes.
Other municipalities have found it appropriate to disinfect sewage plant effluent to destroy
harmful bacteria as well as to increase dissolved oxygen and reduce the water temperature
critical for the protection of fish and other aquatic life. Therefore, I believe it to be of the utmost
importance that a municipality, like Chicago, otherwise known for having one of the most
advanced waste water treatment facilities in the world, should do likewise.
I
am well aware of the water quality improvements that have been made in our area, due in large
measure to the substantial investment in the Deep Tunnel Project. However, the opportunity to
continue on this excellent path of water quality improvement presents itself only now and I urge
your support of the Illinois EPA recommendation to disinfect waste water effluent – surely,
generations yet to come will appreciate your and our commitment to do so.
