Re: Rule Making R08-009
Dear Members of the Illinois Pollution Control Board:
On behalf of my constituent residents and businesses in the 32
nd
Ward of Chicago and the City of
Chicago, I write to express my full support for the recommended water quality standard improvements
proposed by the EPA for the Chicago Area Waterways (CAWS) and Lower Des Plaines River under rule-
making R08-009.
As an outdoor enthusiast, and conservationist, I understand the vital link between our natural resources,
and quality of life issues for all who benefit from clean water resources. I support the Illinois EPA
recommendations so we can take another step in improving the water quality in the region for everyone's
use. It is essential that the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District disinfect sewage treatment plant
effluent to kill bacteria and protect public health and implement temperature and dissolved oxygen
standards to protect fish and help them flourish in a cleaner water source.
Having been transformed from a sewage ridden reservoir to an economic and recreational asset came
about because of the commitment of many organizations
and
governmental entities
to make the .system
useful again. We should assist the Water Reclamation District, the City of Chicago, the Chicago Park
District and all other community based organizations looking to continually improve the system in any
way possible. The implementation of these improvements will keep us moving in the right direction.
I encourage the members of the IPCB to join in the efforts of the Illinois EPA and others in reclaiming
our natural resources through long term planning and to maintain this vital public resource for now and
future generations.
Yours very trul ,
Scott E. Wa spack
Alderman, City of Chicago
