Disposal
Company Delisting
Petition AS 2008-0 10
Dear
Illinois Pollution Control Board:
I am writing to ask
you to approve
the request to delist electric arc
furnace
dust
referenced above. There are several
reasons but it seems that
“green” is
the word these days
and this
seems to be part of doing
green things that the
opponents miss. The dust is the result
of the process of recycling steel.
This
is a resource
conserving, green
process. I have seen the
opponents offer no
alternatives. I understand that
there are high temperature
processes that can
be applied to the waste. I do not know the details but
would presume that
these are
energy intensive processes
and would probably result
in some
waste as
well. After the initial recycling
process it seems we get into
a case
of
diminishing returns and as energy costs rise
are the alternates
economically viable with equal environmental
benefits?
The
treatment/delisting of wastes
by
chemical
processes has been done for
years with much information published and research continuing
to improve
the process.
There are numerous cases
of similar delistings across the
country. To me, the process used is akin to remineralizing the
metals —
putting them back into a similar state that they were found in nature.
Thank you for your
consideration.
