ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY,

INTERIM ORDER OF THE BOARD
(by Mr. Henss):
Commonwealth Edison Company has filed a Motion requesting
extension of an Interim Variance previously granted by the
Board on April
4, 1974.
The April
4,
1974 Order extended
(1)
a variance previously granted on April
4,
1973 and amended
on November 29, 1973 relative to
the Waukegan Station and
(2)
a variance granted on October 4,
1973 and amended on November 29,
1973 and again on December 20, 1973 relative to the Sabrooke
Station.
The Motion
is hereby allowed and Edison is granted
an extension of the interim variance until August
4,
1974 for
its Waukegan Station and its Sabrooke Units
1,
2 and
3.
The
shutdown dates
for Sabrooke Units
2 and
3 wjll now be August
4,
1974.
On May
9,
1974
the Federal Energy Office orally gave
Edison permission to use oil in Sabrooke Unit
ff4 and to proceed
with conversion of either Sabrooke Unit
2 or
3 to oil firing.
However, Edison reports that no ruling has been made relative
to the oil conversion of the remaining two units.
If Edison
were required to adhere to the previous interim variance, Sabrooke
could experience difficulties in meeting that Station’s summer
peak load requirements.
Hearings are currently proceeding on Edison’s variance
request for five stations,
including the Waukegan and Sabrooke
Stations.
Neither
the
Agency
nor
the
Attorney
General
has
expressed
any
objection
to
this
interim extension and the Board
believes
that
this
extension
will
allow
for
orderly
completion
of
the
record which is requisite for our final decision in this matter.
IT IS SO ORDERED.
